The 3 components that make up a healthy lawn are air, water, and nutrients.
The main reason for aeration is to alleviate compaction by pulling 3" cores (about the width of your finger) throughout the lawn. This allows more air, water and nutrients to enter the soil allowing the roots to grow deeper and produce a stronger healthier lawn. The best time for lawn aeration is while the grass is still growing in the Spring or Fall seasons.
